Carya
Key Characters: Trees with alternate, pinnately compound leaves. Shagbark hickory, the most common example on campus, has a distinctive shaggy bark, and a large ovate terminal bud. This is easily distinguished from ash as ash has opposite leaves.

Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
Bitternut or Yellowbud Hickory (Carya cordiformis)
